La Rondalla Segoviana plays traditional music of the Las Segovias hills, a sparsely-populated region of northern Nicaragua bordering Honduras. Based in the small town of Estelí, the band has an underlying mission of conserving and promoting the musical and dance heritage of the area's rural campesino peasants.
High quality recordings provide four distinct benefits: 1) an audio archive of the music as played by a generation now dying off, 2) a recording of sufficient quality to play on local and regional radio stations, 3) a study aid for students of the music, and 4) accompaniment for community dancers when a live band is unavailable.
With proceeds generated by the sale of their album, bandleaders Alfredo Quintero and son Carlos are funding a small recording studio to capture the traditional music and musicians of Las Segovias before the tradition is lost.
